“The power of dreams.”
Global manufacturer advancing humanoid robotics. ASIMO (2000-2022) defined the field; new programs underway.
Honda was founded in 1948 in Hamamatsu, Japan, and grew from a motorcycle manufacturer into one of the world's largest automotive and power equipment companies. Honda's robotics programme, launched seriously in the 1980s, produced ASIMO: the most famous humanoid robot of its era. ASIMO's development between 1986 and its public retirement in 2022 served as a decades-long demonstration that bipedal walking robots were technically achievable, inspiring an entire generation of robotics researchers.
Honda's robotics research now continues under the Honda Research Institute, with projects focused on manipulation, mobility assistance, and human-robot collaboration. The company has not announced a commercial successor to ASIMO, but has demonstrated experimental platforms in manufacturing assistance and accessibility applications. Honda's deep engineering expertise in mechanical systems, powertrains, and materials provides a strong foundation for advanced robotic hardware.
Honda's robotics work is funded from corporate R&D rather than external investment, meaning it operates with longer time horizons and less commercial pressure than startup competitors.
Honda does not sell humanoid robots commercially. Their robotics work is research-oriented and demonstrated through corporate announcements and exhibitions. Honda's automotive and power equipment businesses have a strong UK presence, but their robotics division does not operate a UK sales channel.
ASIMO units were never sold commercially and no secondhand market exists. Honda's mobility devices such as UNI-CUB were produced in very limited numbers for demonstration purposes. UK buyers cannot source Honda robotics hardware through any conventional channel.
