“Progress for humanity.”
Parent company of Boston Dynamics (acquired 2021). Also developing its own robotics programs across the group.
Hyundai Motor Group was founded in 1967 in Seoul and is now one of the world's largest automotive conglomerates, with interests spanning vehicles, construction equipment, and advanced technology. Hyundai's acquisition of Boston Dynamics from SoftBank in 2021 for approximately $1.1 billion was the defining event in the company's robotics strategy, instantly placing it at the frontier of legged robotics alongside its own internal development programmes.
Beyond Boston Dynamics, Hyundai has developed its own humanoid and service robot programmes, including the DAL-e customer service robot and research into factory automation humanoids under the Boston Dynamics AI Institute, established in 2023. The AI Institute focuses on foundational research in machine learning for manipulation and locomotion, aimed at accelerating practical deployment of robotic systems in Hyundai's own manufacturing plants.
Hyundai's scale and manufacturing expertise, combined with Boston Dynamics' technology platform, position the group as one of the most credible long-term players in commercial humanoid deployment.
Boston Dynamics products, particularly Spot, are available in the UK through authorised resellers and directly from Boston Dynamics. Spot units are priced from approximately £60,000 to £80,000 new. Stretch is available for enterprise logistics customers. DAL-e is not currently sold in the UK market.
Used Spot units are the most commonly available Hyundai group robotics hardware on the UK market, appearing through industrial equipment resellers and occasionally directly from companies that have completed contract deployments. Used Spot units trade from £20,000 to £45,000 depending on generation, payload module, and condition. Battery pack condition and joint wear are the primary checks.
