Toyota Research Institute (TRI) develops humanoid manipulation robots. T-HR3 telepresence humanoid and newer platforms.
Toyota was founded in 1937 and is one of the world's largest automotive manufacturers, headquartered in Toyota City, Japan. The company's robotics research is conducted primarily through the Toyota Research Institute (TRI), established in 2015 and based in California. TRI focuses on the application of machine learning and robotics to manufacturing, mobility, and home assistance, with humanoid manipulation as a key research thread.
TRI's large behaviour model approach to manipulation, using large datasets of human demonstrations to train robot manipulation policies, has produced impressive results in dexterous task learning and has been widely cited in the research community. The T-HR3 telepresence humanoid, developed separately by Toyota's internal engineering teams, demonstrated remote manipulation capability and was shown at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
Toyota's interest in robotics extends beyond research: the company sees robotic assistance as important for Japan's ageing population and declining workforce, giving the programme strategic relevance beyond manufacturing efficiency.
Toyota does not sell robotics products commercially in the UK. HSR units are available to selected research institutions through a formal application programme rather than open commercial sale. UK universities with active robotics programmes may apply for HSR research partnerships through Toyota's academic liaison channels.
Toyota robotics hardware is not sold commercially and no secondhand market exists in the UK. HSR units provided to research institutions are not typically resold. TRI research platforms are internal-only and have never been available for external purchase.
