A used Dobot MG400 with controller, in working condition with under 5,000 run hours, should be priced at £3,200 to £5,200. The MG400 retails around £7,500 new with controller; a 30–55% used saving is consistent with the broader cobot market. Condition and run hours are the primary pricing variables.
The MG400 excels at tabletop automation tasks: small-part assembly, pick-and-place, PCB handling, light palletising, gluing, and inspection with a mounted vision system. Its 0.5 kg payload and 440 mm reach are suited to components under 400 g within arm's reach. It is not suited to applications requiring payload above 500 g or reach beyond 440 mm.
The UR3e has a larger payload (3 kg) and longer reach (500 mm), a more established integrator ecosystem, and stronger long-term support — but costs around £18,000 new versus £7,500 for the MG400. For sub-500 g tabletop tasks in a cost-constrained SME environment, the MG400 is the more practical entry-level choice. For applications that may scale, or where a UR integrator is already engaged, the UR3e is the safer long-term platform.
The MG400 is not a certified collaborative robot in the ISO/TS 15066 sense — it does not include the force-limiting safety monitoring of the Universal Robots UR series. A PUWER risk assessment is still required. For most tabletop applications at low speeds, the MG400 passes without full safety fencing, but this must be confirmed by a qualified safety assessor for each specific application.
