Budget variant of TurtleBot 4 at $1,195 with 9 kg payload and 192 mm height, omitting the RPLIDAR for cost reduction. Suited to entry-level ROS2 navigation coursework in UK universities and FE colleges where sensor add-ons are managed separately. Runs full ROS2 stack; camera and odometry sufficient for introductory autonomy labs.
The TurtleBot 4 Lite is the budget variant of TurtleBot 4, priced at $1,195 with a 9 kg payload and 192 mm height. It uses the same iRobot Create 3 base as the full TurtleBot 4 but omits the RPLiDAR A1M8 and replaces the OAK-D depth camera with a simpler monocular camera. This makes it suitable for courses and research projects where navigation and perception experiments can be conducted with camera-based rather than LiDAR-based sensing, or where students provide their own sensor hardware.
The TurtleBot 4 Lite retains full ROS2 compatibility and the iRobot Create 3 drive base, meaning that the core platform software, tutorials, and curriculum materials developed for TurtleBot 4 apply equally to the Lite version.
TurtleBot 4 Lite is appropriate for UK universities and FE colleges that want to introduce ROS2 mobile robot programming at a lower per-unit cost, enabling larger cohorts to have hands-on robot access within constrained departmental budgets. It is also useful for student-led projects and final-year dissertations where students want affordable individual access to a research-grade mobile robot.
For courses that focus on visual SLAM and computer vision navigation, the camera-based sensing approach of the Lite version may be preferable anyway, as it forces engagement with image-based methods rather than the simpler LiDAR data processing used in most introductory ROS tutorials.
A secondary market is emerging. The iRobot Create 3 base condition and battery health are the primary inspection points. Camera calibration should be verified on used units.
TurtleBot 4 is the full-specification version for courses requiring LiDAR. TurtleBot 3 Burger is a lower-cost alternative for institutions remaining on ROS1. Elephant Robotics myAGV is a further budget reduction option if ROS2 compatibility is not a requirement.
