Ultra-lightweight cable-driven dual-arm robot from NAVER LABS at 2.6 kg per arm with 3 kg payload and 5 m/s end-effector speed. At pre-order stage; designed for safe high-speed manipulation research and service robotics applications where low inertia and speed are critical requirements.
The NAVER LABS Ambidex is an ultra-lightweight cable-driven dual-arm robot developed by the research and development division of the South Korean technology company NAVER. Each arm weighs only 2.6 kg, yet delivers 3 kg payload capacity, achieved through a cable-driven actuation architecture that places motors away from the distal joints. This design philosophy prioritises safety in human-collaborative environments, as the lightweight arms present significantly lower collision energy than conventional rigid-link cobot arms of equivalent payload.
The cable-driven design reduces the moment of inertia at the arm tips, enabling compliant, safe interaction with humans and delicate objects. This makes Ambidex particularly suited to environments where accidental contact is likely, such as service robotics applications and research settings where researchers interact closely with the hardware.
Ambidex is primarily of interest to researchers in human-robot interaction, collaborative manipulation, and service robotics. Its lightweight construction makes it suitable for mounting on mobile bases for mobile manipulation research, and the dual-arm bimanual architecture opens up research questions in two-handed coordination and assembly.
In a commercial context, the cable-driven compliance could be valuable in applications requiring gentle handling of fragile items or close proximity to human workers, though commercial deployment is currently limited by the pre-order production status.
No secondary market exists at present. The platform is in pre-order stage with limited production quantities. Interested parties should contact NAVER LABS directly.
