Ecorobotix
Solar-powered precision spraying robot from Ecorobotix with 12-hour runtime and 6 km/h speed, priced at $60,000. Targets individual weeds with micro-doses of herbicide, reducing chemical use by up to 95 percent compared to broadcast spraying. Deployed on arable and vegetable farms across Europe including the UK.
The Ecorobotix ARA is a solar-powered autonomous precision spraying robot designed to dramatically reduce herbicide and pesticide consumption through hyper-targeted application. Developed by the Swiss company Ecorobotix and priced at approximately $60,000, the ARA uses an array of cameras and AI vision to identify individual plants across a field, distinguishing crops from weeds in real time. It then applies micro-doses of treatment directly to target plants, using up to 95% less chemical input than conventional boom spraying.
The ARA's solar panels provide continuous daytime energy input, extending operational time well beyond standard battery-only platforms. The robot operates autonomously across the field width (up to 6.5 m span) and can treat crops including sugar beet, vegetables, and inter-row arable crops.
In the UK context, the ARA is relevant for vegetable growers, sugar beet producers, and arable farmers under pressure to reduce chemical inputs. The shift away from neonicotinoids and growing herbicide-resistance challenges in UK arable farming make precision application technology economically attractive. For a 500-hectare arable farm, the reduction in active ingredient cost alone can generate a meaningful return on the capital investment within two to four seasons.
The ARA integrates with farm management information systems (FMIS) and generates application maps for traceability, which is increasingly relevant for assured supply chain requirements.
A small secondary market exists for ARA units, primarily via European agricultural machinery dealers. Because the robot's software and AI models are maintained via Ecorobotix cloud updates, any used unit should be verified for active software support before purchase. Ecorobotix has a distribution presence in the UK market.
