Fendt
Swarm-based autonomous corn seeding robot from Fendt with 4-hour runtime per unit. Each small robot plants one seed at a time with precise placement, reducing compaction compared to large tractor-implement combinations. Currently in field piloting in Germany and Austria; not yet available for commercial purchase.
The Fendt Xaver is a swarm-based autonomous corn seeding system developed by AGCO's Fendt brand. Each individual Xaver unit is a small, lightweight robot (approximately 25 kg) equipped with a single seed drill, operating in coordinated swarms across large fields. The swarm model distributes the risk of a single large machine breakdown, reduces soil compaction significantly compared with conventional large tractors, and allows seeding to continue continuously by hot-swapping units for charging while others work. Each unit has a 4-hour runtime per charge.
The Xaver swarm is managed via a cloud-based farm management application that coordinates unit paths, monitors seeding progress, and flags any unit issues. GPS-RTK guidance ensures accurate row spacing and seed placement comparable to conventional seeder performance.
For UK maize growers, Xaver addresses two significant concerns: soil compaction and seeding timeliness. Heavy conventional machinery on wet UK spring soils causes structural damage that can persist for years, reducing yields and drainage. The Xaver swarm's low per-unit ground pressure minimises this damage substantially. Swarm seeding also allows work to continue during brief weather windows because the fleet can complete a field faster than a single machine.
Maize is the primary UK application, but the swarm concept is intended to extend to other row crops as the platform develops. ROI calculations typically factor in both yield protection from reduced compaction and labour cost reduction.
No secondary market exists for Xaver units, as the platform remains in the piloting stage. Commercial availability and pricing have not been formally announced by Fendt. Growers interested in this technology should engage with their Fendt dealer for the latest development timeline.
