“Changing your idea of what robots can do.”
Pioneer of dynamic robotics. Spot is the benchmark industrial quadruped; Atlas is the benchmark humanoid. Acquired by Hyundai in 2021.
Boston Dynamics was founded in 1992 as a spin-off from MIT, initially focused on simulation software before pivoting to physical robotics in the mid-1990s. The company built its reputation on legged robots that could navigate unstructured terrain, producing early research platforms like BigDog and PETMAN under DARPA contracts. After a period under Google and then SoftBank ownership, Hyundai Motor Group acquired a controlling stake in 2021, providing the manufacturing scale needed to commercialise products at volume.
The company operates two flagship product lines. Spot is the gold standard industrial quadruped, used globally for inspection, data collection, and hazardous environment access. Atlas is the benchmark humanoid, showcasing whole-body coordination and dynamic movement that remains unmatched in research demonstrations. Boston Dynamics has also released Stretch, a mobile case-handling robot targeting warehouse logistics alongside the humanoid market.
Boston Dynamics holds a unique position: it is both a commercial robotics vendor and an ongoing proof of what bipedal and quadrupedal machines can physically achieve. That dual identity drives both its sales pipeline and its valuation.
Boston Dynamics sells Spot in the UK through authorised resellers and direct enterprise agreements. Pricing starts at approximately £60,000 to £75,000 depending on configuration and sensor payloads. Deployments are documented across UK energy, utilities, and construction sectors. BP and National Grid are among organisations that have run Spot pilot programmes. UK support is available through the European distributor network.
Used Spot units appear occasionally through decommissioned pilot programmes, equipment auctions, and enterprise disposals. Expect to pay £25,000 to £50,000 for a used Spot depending on generation, hours, and payload condition. Software subscriptions and Boston Dynamics cloud services require an active commercial licence, which transfers with the robot but needs account migration. Buyers should verify the unit's software version, check for frame wear at the hip joints, and confirm battery cycle counts. Third-party payload compatibility remains broad regardless of age.
