Boston Dynamics' industrial benchmark quadruped with 14 kg payload, IP54 protection, and Spot Arm option adding 6-DoF manipulation, priced at $74,500. Weighs 33.8 kg (battery included), reaches 1.6 m/s, and delivers 90 minutes of runtime from a 564 Wh battery. Deployed in UK oil and gas, nuclear, and construction sectors for autonomous inspection. The most widely deployed commercial robot dog globally, with strong UK operator community.
Boston Dynamics Spot is the benchmark industrial quadruped robot, used across oil and gas, utilities, construction, and defence sectors globally. Manufactured by Boston Dynamics in Waltham, Massachusetts (a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group since 2021), Spot carries 14 kg of payload, carries IP54 protection, and is available with the Spot Arm accessory for manipulation tasks. At $74,500, it is the most expensive quadruped in this price range but carries the most mature software ecosystem and the most extensive third-party integration catalogue.
Boston Dynamics provides a comprehensive SDK with autonomy packages for automated inspection routes, anomaly detection, and teleoperation.
Spot is deployed for automated inspection of power plants, oil refineries, construction sites, and mines. BP, Chevron, and National Grid are among the operators using Spot for remote inspection. The Spot Arm enables valve operation and object retrieval. In the UK, Network Rail and several utility operators have deployed Spot for infrastructure inspection. The Spot Enterprise platform supports multi-robot fleet management.
Used Spot units appear occasionally through Boston Dynamics certified resellers and enterprise equipment auctions. Pricing for used units ranges from £40,000 to £60,000. Boston Dynamics provides a recertification programme. Check battery cycles (Boston Dynamics recommends battery replacement at approximately 500 cycles), inspect leg actuator wear, and verify SDK version compatibility.
