Boston Dynamics' original hydraulic Atlas was the benchmark humanoid research platform for over a decade, priced at approximately $150,000 (around £118,000). Standing 1.5 m with 28 degrees of freedom, Atlas became globally recognised through viral videos demonstrating backflips, parkour, and complex agility routines that no other robot of its era could replicate. Boston Dynamics has since transitioned entirely to the all-electric 2024 Atlas, meaning the hydraulic variant is effectively a legacy research platform no longer sold new. Its influence on bipedal locomotion algorithms, whole-body control research, and public perception of humanoid capability remains foundational to the entire field. The hydraulic Atlas was also used in the DARPA Robotics Challenge, where teams from around the world developed manipulation and mobility software using it as the reference platform.

Use Cases
