Unitree's developer-tier Go2 with 4D LiDAR L2, front and rear cameras, ROS2 support, and 1 to 2-hour runtime at $2,800. 12 DoF and 8 kg nominal payload (max 10 kg) with full SDK access make it the Go2 sweet spot for university robotics labs. Adds wireless vector positioning, 4G with GPS, and voice function over the Air. Available new from Unitree's UK partners; small used market emerging at £1,200 to £1,600.
The Unitree Go2 Pro is the mid-tier variant of Unitree's Go2 quadruped family, priced at $2,100. It upgrades the Go2 Air with a 4D lidar (adding intensity data to the 3D point cloud for better surface material discrimination), front and rear cameras for 360-degree visual coverage, ROS2 support, and a longer runtime of approximately 1.5 hours. Unitree Robotics manufactures it in Hangzhou, China, and it represents the recommended entry point for developers and small research groups that need reliable sensor coverage and standard ROS2 integration.
The Go2 Pro has become one of the most widely adopted affordable quadrupeds in international robotics research, appearing in papers across locomotion, navigation, and inspection. Its combination of ROS2 support, accessible price, and genuine outdoor capability makes it a practical default for most research and development projects that do not require the open low-level SDK of the EDU variant.
The 4D LiDAR L2 provides a 360 x 96 degree hemispherical field of view with 0.05 m minimum detection distance. The Pro adds wireless vector positioning, 4G GPS, and voice function over the Air variant. ROS2 support enables integration with the broader open-source robotics ecosystem.
The Go2 Pro is used for indoor SLAM research, small-scale outdoor inspection tasks, campus demonstrations, university robotics courses requiring ROS2 compatibility, and as a development platform for autonomous navigation algorithms. It can perform basic autonomous navigation and obstacle avoidance using its lidar and cameras, sufficient for corridor following and room mapping tasks.
Used Go2 Pro units are available through robotics community forums and eBay UK, typically priced at £1,200 to £1,700. Check lidar and camera module integrity before purchase. Confirm the ROS2 driver version is compatible with your target distribution and verify SDK2 access. Battery condition is important; test runtime under a 3 kg payload to confirm the battery retains close to its rated capacity.
