UR20

Overview

The Universal Robots UR20 is Universal Robots' first robot outside the traditional e-Series family, representing a new generation of UR design and the company's move into higher-payload and higher-speed collaborative automation. It offers 20 kg payload and 1,750 mm reach across 6 axes, with a 5 m/s TCP speed that is substantially faster than any previous UR model. The UR20 is aimed at palletising, machine tending, and welding tasks requiring both a large work envelope and higher throughput. Universal Robots manufactures it in Odense, Denmark.

The UR20 runs PolyScope X, an updated controller architecture from the PolyScope 5 platform used on the e-Series, with improved cycle times and expanded fieldbus support. UR+ certified peripherals from the existing catalogue are compatible with the UR20.

The 5 m/s TCP speed is roughly five times faster than the UR10e's peak, which has significant implications for cycle time in palletising applications. The 1,750 mm reach enables coverage of full European pallet heights from a fixed base position.

Use Cases

The UR20 targets end-of-line palletising in food, beverage, and consumer goods manufacturing; tending large machine tools such as press brakes and CNC machining centres; and robotic welding on longer seam paths. Its combination of reach and speed makes it viable for replacing traditional industrial palletising robots while retaining collaborative safety certification, reducing the need for full safety fencing in appropriate risk assessments.

Buying Used

The UR20 launched in 2022 and the secondhand market is still relatively thin. When units appear, expect to pay £35,000 to £55,000. Verify PolyScope X firmware version and confirm whether any custom application licences or UR+ peripherals are included. Given the higher total weight of 64 kg, confirm that any mounting structure or column is rated appropriately before installation.
